My educational journey started in South Africa as a pre-school teacher which I have built on with a number of Canadian degrees since our family’s immigration to Canada in 2004.
I would describe my specialty as the integration of faith questions with everyday thinking, being and doing to assist individuals to grow towards a greater measure of wholeness in body, soul and spirit. Life sometimes throw us some curve balls, be it a conflicted marriage relationship, a child receiving an autism diagnosis, a gnawing anxiety that leave one depressed, the inability to say good by to a loved one, the heartache of a wayward child, or the betrayal of a long trusted friend. It is at times like these that the help of a Christian mental health counsellor can make all the difference to bring the scattered threads of one’s life together to restore faith in God, faith in oneself, and faith in others.
My life experiences have given me opportunities to serve extensively in various church ministries and christian schools, as well as outside the church as a community chaplain on the streets of Surrey and with clients from neighboring community corrections. What I have learned, is that our lives can sometimes be very broken, yet, with the help of the Master Potter, we can be made beautiful and whole again, and we can even learn to sing again in the night.
Over the last 3 years I have expanded my work to include educational support to families of children diagnosed with complex developmental and behavioral conditions within a homeschooling environment, and I continue to expand my understanding of Autism spectrum disorder, gifted Asperger’s, and mild intellectual disabilities and how best to support families in this context.
I would describe my counseling work as eclectic, meaning that I draw on a broad range of proven therapies and interventions to assist my clients through the counselling process to construct new beliefs about self, others and life, which in turn, allows adaptive behaviors. I also make use of prayer and bibliotherapy when clients are agreeable to incorporate these interventions into their healing journey.
